r/CasualConversation on Reddit: Why don't people use chat rooms anymore?

I miss how the internet was say 13 years ago. People seemed to be genuinely interested in chatting and making friends online. I’ve met some of my best friends online back in those times. We still talk daily.Try some now. They're awful. As an "old" person, I hate Discord. Everyone on there is really young, and with the chat rooms I've been to it's like people barely "chat" in them there (I suspect the only ones people seriously chat in like the good ole days are the gamer ones).

Group Chat Doesn't Suck. The Way We're Using It Sucks - Fast Company

We either love or hate our team's group chat. But is the problem with the UX or our expectations of it? It’s finally here. “Group chat applications like Slack, HipChat, and others are due for a backlash,” reported Bloomberg in late January. “Slack, I’m breaking up with you,” wrote Samuel Hulick in a great post a month later.Yep, the backlash has arrived. It’s not a huge surprise: after all, group chats like Slack and HipChat—which aim to replace email by creating a central chatroom (or rooms) where employees can constantly communicate in real time—have seen unprecedented growth over the past two years.Yet many of the designers and usability experts I spoke with suggested that while there’s definitely room for improvement in the design of group chats, there’s also a lesson to be learned in the remarkable expectations users set for them.Ben Brown, a designer and developer based in Austin, is well aware. So aware, in fact, that Brown is building a company to fix it: Howdy, an AI chatbot, sits over Slack to fix some of the inherent problems with group chat—things that, from a UX perspective, simply need to be tailored to fit each unique group or business.

r/dating_advice on Reddit: why do so many guys [people] have such shit chat?

why is it like trying to draw blood from a stone? am I bothering you? is it my responsibility to coax it out if them? should I be patient and accept… Lawyers and investment banker girls are great at it. But the average hot girl sucks. It might not be so much that they have dry chats, but more that they have dry chats with you and if you're talking about a dating app, they don't really know you enough to know what you're interests are. If they aren't interested, they probably don't even care that much to be friendly and tell you more about themselves or vice versa. The only thing they know about you Is what you look like, which might not even be true or what you put in your profile, which most people don't read. I can almost guarantee you the same people you have dry chats with have at least three group chats going of them being extremely active in them.We can't chat you up in public, at a gym, in a car, at a coffee shop...UNLESS you think we're "hot"...and most of us don't even know how attractive we might be...we can't do anything for fear of being thrown on social media and labeled a creep; we're told we don't show enough vulnerability but when we do, we're "weak" and that's now cringe and y'all can't be with a vulnerable dude, so...

OpenAI: GPT-5 Is Less of a Suck-Up, But It Tolerates More Hateful Behavior | PCMag

OpenAI had to make a major adjustment to GPT-4o in May 2025 after a spike in the chatbot sucking up to the user. The new flagship model proves less 'sycophantic' in OpenAI's internal testing, but it more readily complies with inappropriate user requests for sexual and hateful content.Still, you'd think that GPT-5's "PhD-level" smarts would make it better at following policies. Is it a case of book smarts versus street smarts? Poor chatbot behavior is an ongoing and concerning issue across the industry, especially after Elon Musk's Grok went off the rails on X.At the same time, GPT-5 brings some important improvements. Some of ChatGPT's most annoying behaviors—sycophancy and hallucinations—should be less prevalent.I Asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok to Do My 'Deep Research'. One AI ChatBot Came Out on Top

ChatGPT Now Issuing Warnings to Users Who Seem Obsessed

More on ChatGPT: It Doesn't Take Much Conversation for ChatGPT to Suck Users Into Bizarre Conspiratorial Rabbit Holes After months of warnings from experts and users alike, OpenAI has issued a small update to give users "gentle reminders" to take breaks.Months after OpenAI was warned about the potential psychological harms ChatGPT can cause for its users — particularly those predisposed to mental health struggles — the company says it's rolled out an "optimization" meant to calm the fears of mental health experts who have become increasingly alarmed about the risks its software poses.A number of users have already uploaded screenshots of the popup to social media — "You've chatted a lot today," they say, asking whether it's a "good time to pause for a break?" — and early reviews are mixed. Finally, the blog notes that OpenAI is "working closely with experts to improve how ChatGPT responds in critical moments — for example, when someone shows signs of mental or emotional distress." These are said to include dialogues with more than 90 medical experts across the globe, human-computer-interaction (HCI) clinicians, as well as an advisory group made up of mental health, youth development and HCI researchers to keep OpenAI up to date on the latest research and "best practices."

r/CasualConversation on Reddit: Am I the only one who think Reddit chat sucks and a lot of times get dry easily.

Hi, I have talked to few people on Reddit but the chat always seems to go dry and I don’t understand why. Maybe there’s something weird with me. Chatting Sucks - Website of a Disgruntled Human

Hi there kids, today we’re going to bitch about chat rooms and chatters. I have some serious problems about chatting going through my head and I am going to put them down on this page. Hi there kids, today we’re going to bitch about chat rooms and chatters. I have some serious problems about chatting going through my head and I am going to put them down on this page. These aren’t the normal gripes you might get about a chat room, like how some people are mean, or lie or fake their identity. As far as I’m concerned, if I do go into a chat room, I want to have fun. It is a chat room, not a pickup room, or a problem-solving room. I do not want to fall in love with you. I do not want to try and describe what I look like, because you know I’ll just lie anyway. The one thing I really hate is when I enter a chat room and the first thing everyone wants to know is my A/S/L. These are the same numb nuts that ask for your pictures. What the hell is up with that? It is especially sad on a Friday or Saturday night when all these supposedly hot girls are trying to get you to talk to them.I had a lot of people that I met in Talkcity. The key word here is HAD. Most of these people are no longer around anymore, at least not where I can find them. Some of you hardcore chatting fools may ask why don’t I just go out and find some new chatting pals?

Should AI flatter us, fix us, or just inform us? | MIT Technology Review

Back in April, it reversed a design update after people complained ChatGPT had turned into a suck-up, showering them with glib compliments. GPT-5, released on August 7, was meant to be a bit colder. Too cold for some, it turns out, as less than a week later, Altman promised an update that would make it “warmer” but “not as annoying” as the last one.OpenAI is failing to pick a lane, perhaps because CEO Sam Altman thinks it can do all three. He faces a trilemma. Should ChatGPT flatter us, at the risk of fueling delusions that can spiral out of hand? Or fix us, which requires us to believe AI can be a therapist despite the evidence to the contrary? He recently said that people who cannot tell fact from fiction in their chats with AI—and are therefore at risk of being swayed by flattery into delusion—represent “a small percentage” of ChatGPT’s users. He said the same for people who have romantic relationships with AI.

Why ChatGPT sucks. I decided to use ChatGPT because I… | by Sergio Augusto Sánchez | Medium

However, my experience with the much-renowned artificial…Convinced that ChatGPT had come into the world to save us from ourselves, I decided to ask her about myself. She doesn’t know me. She says she searched her databases and nothing — I don’t exist. I was shaken. In the end, I decided to ask her more difficult questions, more metaphysical if you will, but ChatGPT does not believe in ghosts; her answer was quite rational and therefore bland. I asked her about god and her answer was diplomatic — boring. She also didn’t want to take a position on the existence of life after death. When I asked her for information I needed for writing a crime novel, she thought I was suicidal and sent me to seek help, to visit a health professional. At that moment I had had enough. It was four in the morning and I had been going from question to question with ChatGPT for five hours.

Annoyed ChatGPT users complain about bot’s relentlessly positive tone - Ars Technica

"ChatGPT is suddenly the biggest suckup I've ever met," wrote software engineer Craig Weiss in a widely shared tweet on Friday. Users complain of new “sycophancy” streak where ChatGPT thinks everything is brilliant. You’re very astute to ask that.” To some extent, ChatGPT has been a sycophant for years, but since late March, a growing cohort of Redditors, X users, and Ars readers say that GPT-4o's relentless pep has crossed the line from friendly to unbearable. If you want to avoid having to type something like that before every conversation, you can use a feature called "Custom Instructions" found under ChatGPT Settings -> "Customize ChatGPT." One Reddit user recommended using these custom instructions over a year ago, showing OpenAI's models have had recurring issues with sycophancy for some time:Alternatively, if you're fed up with GPT-4o's love-bombing, subscribers can try other models available through ChatGPT, such as o3 or GPT-4.5, which are less sycophantic but have other advantages and tradeoffs.
